Tooth Extractions

When a Tooth Cannot Be Saved, Our Goal Is to Preserve Your Future Smile.

At Malloy Perio, preserving your natural teeth is always our first priority. Whenever possible, we recommend treatments that allow you to keep your own teeth for as long as they can be maintained predictably and comfortably.

Unfortunately, some teeth become too severely damaged by infection, periodontal disease, fracture, or decay to be successfully restored. When that occurs, careful tooth removal may be the healthiest long-term solution.

Our focus extends far beyond simply removing the tooth. We are committed to preserving the surrounding bone and gum tissue to provide the best possible foundation for healing and, when appropriate, future tooth replacement.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth has a poor or hopeless long-term prognosis due to:

  • Advanced periodontal disease

  • Severe decay or infection

  • Vertical root fracture

  • Non-restorable tooth structure

  • Significant bone loss

  • Failed previous treatment

  • Impacted or non-erupted teeth

  • Orthodontic or restorative treatment needs

Every recommendation is based on a comprehensive evaluation and discussion of all reasonable treatment options.

Simple and Surgical Extractions

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions are performed when a tooth is fully visible and can be removed without additional surgical access. These procedures are typically completed comfortably using local anesthesia.

Surgical Extractions

Some teeth require a more advanced approach due to fracture, extensive damage, impaction, or anatomy. Surgical extractions allow Dr. Malloy to remove the tooth carefully while preserving as much healthy bone and surrounding tissue as possible.

Preserving Bone After Extraction

Removing a tooth is often only the first step.

After a tooth is extracted, the jawbone naturally begins to shrink as it heals. In many situations, socket preservation (bone grafting) is recommended immediately following extraction to help maintain the natural shape and volume of the ridge.

Preserving the bone can:

  • Reduce future bone loss

  • Support neighboring teeth

  • Improve healing

  • Create a stronger foundation for a future dental implant

  • Enhance long-term function and appearance

Not every extraction requires bone grafting, but preserving the site whenever appropriate can significantly improve future treatment options.

Comfortable, Personalized Care

Your comfort is always a priority. Most extractions are performed comfortably using local anesthesia, and additional sedation options may be available depending on your treatment needs and medical history.

Before treatment, Dr. Malloy will review your diagnosis, discuss your options, explain what to expect during recovery, and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to your goals.

Looking Beyond the Extraction

At Malloy Perio, an extraction is never viewed as the end of treatment—it is part of a comprehensive plan to restore your long-term oral health.

Whether your next step involves preserving the area for future implant placement, rebuilding lost bone, or simply allowing the site to heal naturally, our goal is to provide the most conservative, predictable, and biologically sound care possible.
